CITRINE CRYSTALS

Citrine is a silicon dioxide mineral, a member of the Quartz group with a hardness of 7. Citrines crystal system is trigonal, and its yellow pigmentation is derived from iron. Natural Citrines can vary in shade from a very pale yellow to deep amber, with some specimens exhibiting brownish/greenish tinges. Citrine comes from the French word citron, translated means lemon, and was used as a gemstone in Greece as far back as 300 B.C., and was used for jewelry and intaglios in Ancient Greek and Rome through the first and second centuries A.D. Nowadays, so much of the commercial Citrine on the market is heat-treated Amethyst. This color is very noticeable as it is the deeper amber and orangish shades are heat treated. As a result, natural Citrines are mostly a pale yellowish chartreuseish color. Natural Citrine is mined in Brazil, Africa, Madagascar, Spain, Russia, France, Scotland, and the USA.
